Energy Transition in Uruguay

Recently, an article about Uruguay's Energy Transition become a hot debate topic. The author stated that a renewable energy is possible further. According to the sector statistics shows, (figure 1) in 2014, more than 90 percent of the country’s electricity generation came from clean energy sources in 2014, including from hydropower, biomass, and wind energy. However, Uruguay was a former energy importer in 2006,
34 percent of its electricity demand was supplied by neighboring countries such as Argentina. In 2015, Uruguay has shifted its role to become a net energy exporter, 10 percent of electricity generated locally was, instead, exported.

What is the benefits of energy transition? Obviously, prioritizing renewable energy development enables Uruguay to turn its energy transition into environmental, security, and economic successes. As a result of renewable energy, emissions from domestic power generation will be just 17 grams of carbon dioxide per kilowatt-hour. Moreover, renewable energy had reduced the cost of electricity by 44 percent in Uruguay.
