Urban Public Transportation - A Crucial Part of the Solution to Urban Unsustainability

Cities with overbuilt roadways have experienced unintended consequences, linked to radical drops in public transport, walking, and cycling. Transport systems have significant impacts on the environment, accounting for between 20% and 25% of world energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Greenhouse gas emissions from transport are increasing at a faster rate than any other energy using sector. Therefore, public transport is crucial to the livability of any city because of its social, economic and environmental benefits.

In Malmö, Sweden, a reconstruction project of a former industrial district was initiated known as City of Tomorrow in 2001. The reconstruction of Bo01 developed a sustainable mixed-use residential district focus on sustainable urban development. Waste Management Technology in Malmö Bo01

In the Bo01, The waste management system was created with the aim to develop a system that minimises the amount of waste, makes reuse and recycling possible and enables the use of waste and sewage as an energy source. Having waste separation units close to home is an important part of the planning of the area. The inhabitants usually have a separation room in their house or close by, making it easy for them to sort paper and packaging materials. Organic kitchen waste is ground at the residence and collected in underground vaults (Figure 1), from which it is pumped to an anaerobic digestion chamber. The biological treatment of this slurry by bacteria creates biogas (methane), which is drawn off and used to power public buses or used to generate heat and electricity. Figure 1. Growing Sustainable Food Systems in Growing City

The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) proposed a idea of creating sustainable urban food system aim to solve a city challenged with high levels of poverty, obesity, and population growth. From cultivation, preparation, and distribution to food waste management, this project will provides food security for city residents but does not compromise Earth's systems or the ability of our species to survive. UDC created a rooftop farm in the campus, which is the largest rooftop farm in the city to plant the vegetable and flowers. Beyond the campus, the Firebird Farm is working for the sustainable agri-experiments.
