Why would China propose 'Sponge City'?

In modern concrete city, urban construction destroyed sustainability of water system. City develop the underground pipeline network, stormwater usually is treated as waste and discharged into municipal sewage systems. However, some times this means are unable to cope with elasticity of rainwater that lead to urban flood. Meanwhile, that brings the problem of environmental pollution and loses a highly valuable water resource. Therefore, 'Sponge City' was presented in China as a new water management design concept.

Sponge City focus on the strategy of Low Impact Development (LID) and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS), using 'urban sponge elements' including rivers, lakes, ponds and other water systems solve the drainage problem and supplement groundwater. Moreover, urban infrastructure like green space, gardens, and permeable pavement were seen as a part of Sponge City. The rainwater will be clean, stored and reused during the infiltrating through these 'urban sponge elements’, which can improve efficiency of the urban drainage system and reduce the probability of urban floods.

Waste Management Technology in Malmö Bo01

In the Bo01, The waste management system was created with the aim to develop a system that minimises the amount of waste, makes reuse and recycling possible and enables the use of waste and sewage as an energy source. Having waste separation units close to home is an important part of the planning of the area. The inhabitants usually have a separation room in their house or close by, making it easy for them to sort paper and packaging materials. Organic kitchen waste is ground at the residence and collected in underground vaults (Figure 1), from which it is pumped to an anaerobic digestion chamber. Cities hold a significant potential to make a rapid change toward reduced resource consumption and waste production, greenhouse gasses included. Yet, an ongoing reliance on traditional building codes will however not result in the change needed. Innovative governance tools hold more potential.
