Solid Waste Problem in Malaysia
Solid waste is a major environmental problem in the developing counties, this
problem not only impact ecological sustainable, but also impact human health.
Waste management in Malaysia is till poor due to the lack of awareness and
knowledge among Malaysia community about waste management issue.
Effect of solid
waste on environment
Solid waste is a
main reason of water contamination. That affects all ecosystems existing in
water cause harm to animals that drink polluted water. In addition, hazardous
chemical cause harm to plants when they take up contamination through their
root. Bad waste management practice can produce result in land and air
pollution, and it will affect human health such as respiratory problems.
Moreover, it is very harmful mixture of chemical that may result in hazardous
substance with entering surface water, groundwater and soil.
Effect on health
Exposure to
hazardous waste affects human health. The group at high risk is from
unscientific disposal of solid waste include the population in area where there
is no proper wasted disposal method. Disease that related in respiratory
problem is pneumonia. Every year, estimated 1.1 million children under age of 5
years old because their resident closest to the dumping site, and state that 2.1
million people die because diarrhea disease due to parasitic worm infection
cause from improper waste management.
